Final Hazards Report

Chile is a beautiful nation - home to 19.6 million, full of life, mountains, bodies of water and much much more. Unfortunately, Chile has been struck by harsh natural hazards due to its location and surroundings. Two natural hazards that cause major issues to the nation of Chile and its people are earthquakes and extreme weather conditions - drought in this case. Chile is frequently affected by seismic activity because it lies right on top of the South American plate -  to the west, it is neighboring with the Nazca plate. It is important to note Chile’s proximity to the Nazca plate, because it also connects it to the Pacific plate underwater. The high levels of  seismic activity present in the nation  + the multiple plates raise the possibilities for following natural hazards. It is important to mention that the south American plate is a convergent plate - this means that it places Chile in a position to deal with explosive volcanoes, earthquakes, flooding and landslides. Wk 13; Coastal Hazards

Image
Chile is prone to many environmental issues such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and many other hazards along the coast and because it is a coastal region it has been recently reported to deal with  coastal erosions as well.  An article "Environment pollution and climate change" shared by a group of researchers shares that Chile began to deal with coastal erosions in 2015 with more frequency . Coastal erosions have caused great damage to chile and it's people; it has took the lives of many, damaged the coastal infrastructure, and has even caused  mass amounts of sand loss in the coast of chile. And if that wasn't enough, coastal erosions are also causing financial loss to chile because the damage left behind from coastal erosions keep tourist from wanting to go into the nation and reside within chiles beautiful coastlines. Central Chile has lots of human activity within the area and unfortunately it is the area most affected. That is why Chile has focused on finding ways t

Droughts in Chile  Chile in no stranger to environmental issues. An ongoing issue in Chile are droughts. A drought- a prolonged dry period. The droughts in Chile have impacted the nations and it's people severely , interfering with it's mining and green businesses.  According to an article by Earth Observatory , the droughts present  in chile have led to several other issues such straining the nations water supplies, damaging and parching crops, and even increasing the chances of wildfires for the nation.  During the winter of 2023, Chile received rain and snow which temporarily eased the ongoing issues caused by the drought. The drought in central Chile has been an ongoing issue for the past decade. Chile began to experience a drought in 2010's - according to  Earth Observatory Perception  in Central Chile( where most of the population is present in)  has been below average  and since then the nation has dealt with the consequences of droughts and everything else that fol

Week 8; Mass wasting hazards

Chile is exposed to dealing with landslides.  The cause of the land slides are due to other natural disasters or heavy rain fall. Chile commonly deals with other environmental issues such as earthquakes. Chiles chances of dealing with land slides are high. Think hazard reports that this is due to rainfall patterns, terrain slope, geology, soil, land cover, and of course earthquakes ; which chile is highly prone to. An example of an earthquake leading to a landslide would be the 1960 9.5m earthquake in Chile. After the earthquakes, floods and land slides followed. The land slides affected many communities . Causing destruction and damaging houses of surrounding communities.  A recent landslide in Chile that took place on September 20, 2023 caused three fatalities, and one person missing.  People were isolated, two houses were destroyed, and many others were affected. This land slidwas caused due to heavy rain fall in the Aracunia region of Chile.  Citations;  Araya-Cornejo, Cristian,

Chiles Volcanic Activity

Image
Chile is prone to volcanic activity due to the many volcanoes within Chile and the many surrounding the nation. There are 2,000 volcanoes in chile, they are stratovolcanoes . Experts believe that 500 volcanoes are active. 60 Volcanoes have erupted in the last 450 years and more are believed  to erupt in the future according to experts. Chile is home to two of the most active volcanoes in South America ; the Villarica and Llaima.                 + Volcanoes in Chile   Volcanic eruptions are unavoidable, therefore the nation has constructed plans to help the people of chile in the case of a volcanic eruption. Chile has created a well funded volcanic monitoring and hazard assessment program known as the Red Nacional de Vigilancia Volcanica ( RNVV). With well conducted research and proper monitoring the damage expected of volcanic eruptions can be minimized.  The last volcanic eruption in Chile was in 2015. The Villarica which erupted and it will frequently expected to do so. In 2015, 30 f

Post 2// Chiles Seismicity

Hello,  Chile lies on top of the South American plate. To the west of Chile is the Nazca plate, the Nazca plate  connects to the Pacific plate through the pacific ocean. Chile is surrounded by many plates,  According to an article written by Vision of Humanity, Chile is a country that is very prone to earthquakes. Chile has worked to combat the effects of earthquakes by working with the International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disaster also known as the IPRED. The IPRED is an organization that conducts research within the field of seismology. They have also focused their research on earthquake  engineering to minimize the damage caused by earthquakes on the houses and buildings in Chile.  Sources used;  “Earthquake and Tsunami in Chile: Massive Evacuation and Building Codes to Reduce Loss of Life.” UNESCO.Org , www.unesco.org/en/articles/earthquake-and-tsunami-chile-massive-evacuation-and-building-codes-reduce-loss-life#:~:text=Chile%20is%20actively%20involved%20in,especially%20o

Plate Tectonic January 31, 2024  Chile, like many South American countries, lies right on top of the South American plate. According to an article covered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Chile lies right on top of the South American Plate and is surrounded by the Nazca Plate to the West of the country. The Nazca Plate is connected to the Pacific plate under water. The various connections to tectonic plates  create many hazards for those residing within the country of Chile. An image shared by the U.S Geological survey demonstrates the placement of the tectonic plates. Through the image we see the South American plate. According to the slides covered in class the South American plate is a convergent plate. This means that it is prone to several natural hazards. The natural hazards being explosive volcanoes, earthquakes, flooding, and landslides. Convergent boundaries create collisions. Collisions occur when two plates collide and in instances such as earthquakes,
